Mission Statement

Under the Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 106, the Water Quality Management Program is tasked with monitoring the marine waters of the USVI through the Virgin Islands Coastal Water Quality Monitoring Program. Also, pursuant to requirements of the Beach Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health Act of 2000, DPNR-DEP established the Virgin Islands Beach Water Quality Monitoring Program to improve public health and safety at USVI beaches. Additionally, to assist in the ongoing development and delivery of Water Quality Management Program projects, each fiscal year funds are awarded to the Water Quality Management Program under the 604(b), in an amount determined by Section 205(j) of the Clean Water Act for planning projects associated with assessing and protecting the Territory’s water quality..

Subprograms

Ambient Monitoring Program

  • Monitors the health of potentially threatened biological communities;
  • Prevents degradation of marine waters by carefully reviewing development proposals; and
  • Tests for physical and chemical parameters such as light attenuation, salinity, clarity, temperature, pH, turbidity and dissolved oxygen.

VI BEACH Monitoring Program

  • Performs weekly water quality monitoring at 43 of the Territory’s most popular swimming beaches and
  • Maintains tools and establishes a system to advise the public on water quality condition of their favorite beaches
